More about our Balance Center Staff: Karen Curran-Hogan PT, DPT | Melissa Gomez PT, DPT The Balance Center is a facility that provides unique and specialized care for people with dizziness, vertigo, and balance disorders. Our therapists treat people who have imbalance and falls due to a variety of diagnoses including MS, PD, Post CVA, Post surgical weakness, general deconditioning and neuromuscular disorders, and dizziness due to BPPV, vestibular nurities, labyrinthitis, TBI and post surgical conditions. As part of our evaluation, we perform a comprehensive history of the dizziness, vertigo and imbalance, a neuromuscular exam, gait analysis, balance assessment and an occulomotor/vestibular exam. Based on our findings, we develop individualized treatment and home programs using specialized, evidence-based, treatments and techniques to improve balance, decrease dizziness and prevent falls. Karen Hogan-Curran, PT, DPT Program Director is a physical therapist with fifteen years of clinical experience across general, cardiac, pediatric, outpatient, and vestibular rehab settings. She has worked at The Balance Center since 2002 where she is currently the program director.
She is responsible for program development, training and evaluation and treatment of adult vestibular and balance patients with acute and chronic neurological and vestibular diagnoses. She was awarded the Susan Herdman Certificate of Competency in Vestibular Rehab in 2002 from Emory University.
Dr. Hogan-Curran spent six years at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation where she was a senior physical therapist and gained experience with pediatrics, neurological rehab, cardiac rehab, and orthopedics. She also spent one year at Rusk treating patients with vestibular and balance disorders using infrared goggles, Frenzel lenses and the Smart Balance Master.
She is an experienced program developer and trainer whose presentations include such topics as vestibular rehabilitation, fall prevention, and differential assessment. Dr. Hogan-Curran earned her Post Professional Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from Touro College and received a BS cum laude in Physical Therapy from SUNY Stony Brook. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Back to Top Melissa Gomez, PT, DPT is a physical therapist with 10 years of experience. She graduated NYIT with her Masters in Physical Therapy in 2002. She received her Post Professional Doctorate in Physical Therapy from SUNY Stony Brook in 2006. Dr. Gomez received the prestigious Susan Herdman Certificate of Competency in Vestibular Rehabilitation from Emory University in 2003. She has extensive experience working with patients with neurological and neuromuscular disorders through her position as senior physical therapist with the Department of Education. She began working at The Balance Center in 2002.
